You can also confirm a tow through the Michigan Secretary of State’s Abandoned Vehicle Search by entering your VIN or Michigan license plate number. Please allow up to 24 hours for the information to appear online.

Closed on major holidays. After-hours vehicle releases are not available. Please call ahead before your visit.
Vehicle Release Requirements
Driving the Vehicle From Our Lot
You must provide:
- Valid driver’s license
- Current vehicle registration
- Current proof of insurance
Having the Vehicle Towed From Our Lot
You must provide:
- Vehicle title or current registration
- Government-issued photo ID
Someone Other Than the Registered Owner Picking Up the Vehicle
Required documentation:
- Notarized authorization letter from the owner
- Copy of the owner’s identification
- If the vehicle will be driven from our facility: valid driver’s license, current vehicle registration, and valid proof of insurance
- If the vehicle will be towed from our facility: vehicle title or current vehicle registration
- Any other documentation required by law or the impounding agency
If the registered owner does not have a valid driver’s license, they may be accompanied by two licensed drivers. Any registered vehicle being driven from our facility must be operated by a driver with a valid license.
Business Owners Picking Up a Company-Owned Vehicle
Required documentation:
- Articles of incorporation or proof of ownership as listed on the LARA website
- Valid photo identification
- Current vehicle registration and valid proof of insurance if the vehicle will be driven from our facility
- Vehicle title or current registration if the vehicle will be towed from our facility
Commercial or Company-Owned Vehicles
Required documentation:
- Notarized letter on company letterhead authorizing the vehicle’s release and identifying the person or entity to whom it is being released
- Current vehicle registration and valid proof of insurance if the vehicle will be driven from our facility
- Vehicle title if the vehicle will be towed from our facility
Personal Property Retrieval Fees
Vehicles Housed at Goch & Sons Towing Inc.
- The first retrieval of personal property from a vehicle is provided at no charge.
- A fee will be charged for any additional personal property retrieval visits.
Vehicles Housed in Lincoln Park or Melvindale
- Goch & Sons Towing does not charge for a personal property release. However, the city charges a gate fee.
- First, visit 750 S. Deacon Street, Detroit, MI to pay the gate fee.
- You will receive a receipt and instructions explaining where your vehicle is located.
- One of our team members will meet you and assist with removing your personal property.
How Much Will It Cost to Release My Vehicle?
The total cost to release a vehicle varies depending on several factors, including:
- The type of impound, such as a police or private property impound
- Vehicle size and classification
- Storage duration
- Applicable administrative fees
- Any additional services performed
Because every impound is different, we recommend contacting our office before arriving to obtain your current balance and confirm the release requirements.

Forms of Payment
We accept cash with exact change, debit cards, and credit cards, including Visa, Mastercard, and Discover. American Express is not accepted.
Please note: All credit and debit card transactions are subject to a 3% processing fee.
How to Dispute a Tow
Michigan law provides a process for vehicle owners to challenge a tow, impoundment, or related charges through the district court with jurisdiction over the location of the tow.
The basics:
- The required form, DC 90 – Petition Regarding Impoundment of Motor Vehicle, is available at michigan.gov/courts.
- Petitions must generally be filed within 20 days of the date on the Abandoned Vehicle Notice.
- Court filing fees and bond requirements vary by court.
- Depending on the circumstances, the court may require payment of the charges or a bond before the vehicle can be released.
- If the court determines that the tow or charges were improper, it may order reimbursement of eligible fees.
